Tomita Yukiko

1620×1620mm oil on canvas 2006

TOMITA YUKIKO was born in 1958 in Tokyo. In 1980, she graduated from the Oil Painting and Print-Making Course at the Department of Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts in the “Women’s College of Fine Arts” (B.A).
She uses flowers, berries or landscapes as motives, but they differ from mere realism. The purity in her works can be compared to Buddhist Paintings that are far from reality. The objects are composed as a close-up of flower petals from vertically above that evoke an unexpected unity between the viewer and the motive and may be seen as a gate to a new dimension, a portal to an unknown realm.
The usage of colors in her paintings is subtle, the brushstrokes are gentle and the calm impressions bring about a mysterious fragrance, which is gently released from the screen. The sweet smell that can be felt as an aphrodisiac leaves the viewer in fascination.
